Áras an Mhuilinn – official opening

Áras an Mhuilinn

An Taoiseach - Mr. Brian Cowen TD

Press Release

An Taoiseach Mr Brian Cowen, T.D. will officially open Áras an Mhuilinn in Mullingar at 4.30 pm on Friday next 28th January.

Áras an Mhuilinn is a new regional resource centre recently renovated by Comhaltas Ceolteoiri Eireann near Mullingar town centre.

The resource centre will provide facilities for teaching, researching, archives, performances, rehearsals as well as session playing and an information and research centre.

An Áras also has a shop with a comprehensive selection of traditional musical instruments, CDs and other items relating to Irish Culture.

The centre has been provided with state of the art recording/video equipment and appropriate training.  There is also a radio link to Radio na Gaeltachta in the Áras.

Áras an Mhuilinn is fully bi-lingual and it is expected that it will provide help and support for the development of the Irish Language throughout the midlands.

Mullingar has a unique place in the history of Comhaltas – not least that it was founded in the town in 1951 by a group of traditional music enthusiasts.

The first Fleadh Ceol was also held in Mullingar in 1951 as well as one of the most memorable of Fleadh’s in 1963.

The new Áras an Mhuilinn resource centre was made possible with funding from The Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and The Department of Tourism Culture and Sport.
