Kilbeggan Races August Meeting next Friday

Shakespeare wrote about “our winter of discontent” and Lord Byron wrote about English winters as ending in July & recommencing in August. People who have attended Kilbeggan races this year will understand those sentiments as each meeting has been either cold or wet and even both. In a world of pessimism we will be optimistic that next Friday 19th August at around 5.05 PM the sun will be beaming down on a large crowd at Kilbeggan races. The loyal supporters are due a change of luck and with an excellent 7 race card it should be a good way to start off the week-end.

The first August meeting wasn’t really a case of beauty & the beast but there was great joint entertainment in the Littlewoods Best Dressed Ladies Competition and Operation Transformation which was organised by the local GAA club. In spite of the bad weather a large crowd turned out for the meeting and between showers it was a great occasion. Dessie Hughes has had great success down the years as a jockey and trainer. At the last meeting he had a treble with Rockofinspiration (2/1); Eyre Apparent (6/4) and Action Master (3/1). The latter who ran in the Galway Hurdle won the Kieran Kelly Novice Chase with Brian Cooper on board. This brought great pleasure to the All Gone West Syndicate and special pleasure to Dessie Hughes as Kieran Kelly was long associated with his stable before his tragic death in Kilbeggan a few years ago.

The feature race at the next meeting is the Martinstown Stud Hurdle over 2 miles 3 furlongs sponsored by J.P.McManus. The Pat Doyle Memorial Hurdle honour’s a man who was Treasurer of the Kilbeggan Race committee for many years and he contributed much to its success.

This will be the last opportunity for many families to get together before schools re-open in September and Kilbeggan is always a great place to meet people whether you are a teenager or of a more vintage age. From the music to the bouncing castles, from bars to bookies, from food to family there is something happening to keep everyone happy. Admission is €15 with special family discount package for €25 with children under 16 free. Friday evening can be busy so remember to arrive early for the 5.05 PM start.
