Kilbeggan Races

Cliff Richard sang about a Summer Holiday many years ago and next Saturday 6th August at 5.30PM, Kilbeggan presents its traditional August holiday meeting. For many families the summer holidays begin on the first week of August, which is the time for enjoying life together. With all the entertainment at Kilbeggan races this is an opportunity for a great evening out.

The festival of free fun for children includes obstacle course, super slides, bouncing castles, face painting, cartoon characters, karaoke competition, dancing and music games. Admission for adults is €15, student & pensioners €10 with discount for groups. A special family discount package for €25 includes 2 adults and children under 16 are free.

The racing includes the featured Hackett Bookmakers Handicap Chase of €18,500, generously sponsored by Cyril & Monica Hackett, Hackett Bookmakers; the bumper is sponsored by Tom Bermingham sportswear; the Bank House family are again sponsoring the Joe Cooney Memorial Handicap Hurdle in honour of a man who contributed much to the development of Kilbeggan races. The Beginner’s Chase honours the memory of that fine jockey Kieran Kelly who was tragically killed at Kilbeggan.

The best dressed competition has become a feature at many events and next Saturday’s meeting features the Littlewood’s Ireland Best Dressed Lady Competition worth €3,000. The winner will receive a €2,000 shopping spree with Littlewood’s Ireland and the 10 finalists will receive a €100 shopping spree. Let’s hope the sun shines to give all the ladies an opportunity to dress for the occasion and maybe win a great prize.

Kilbeggan GAA is staging a major evening at the races including a fundraising event. A draw for 10 prizes with a first prize of €1,000 will take place in the parade ring. Tickets are €20 each and will include admission to the races. Everyone is familiar with Operation Transformation from TV etc and as part of the fun of the GAA evening a number of volunteers, male & female, will be “weighed-in” and hopefully will meet their targets after all their hard work in the past few weeks. Two weigh-ins have already taken place and the 16 participants have lost over 85 lbs.

Colm Murphy’s horse Future All Star won the Midlands National at the last meeting, which was a great occasion. Next Saturday should have a great buzz of fun, with all kinds of entertainment and is an ideal evening for a family get together, for GAA friends to meet up, for ladies to dress up, for children to play, with the possibility of winning on the horses, in the draw or perhaps as best dressed lady. What more can you want and as it will be a great evening and plan to be there early as the first race is at 5.30PM.
