Christmas Spirit Comes Early to Mullingar

Christmas Spirit Comes Early to Mullingar

Local Charities to benefit from World Record Attempts

Mullingar will be the place to be on Sunday 18th November 2012.When not one, not two,

not three, but four different World Record Attempts will take  place in the town centre as

part of a promotion to launch the Christmas inMullingar shopping season, to switch on the

Christmas lights and also help raise some much needed funds for local charities.

Three of the record attempts will involve members of the public and the fourth will  require lots

 of encouragement, they are:-

  • A Worlds First, when the town of Mullingar joins forces with Brockton Massachusetts

USA in the first joint transatlantic record attempt between Ireland and America for the most

people wearing santa hats simultaneously in two different continents.

  • The World’s Largest Christmas Card, which will be constructed by members of  Mullingar

Arts Centre.

  • An attempt to break the World record for the  most signatures on a greeting card, this is

another opportunity for us all to  get into the record books, as we hope to beat the current

World Record set in 2010.

  •  The fourth attempt on the day will be for the most Christmas trees chopped down in two

minutes, this task will be taken on by well-known local tree surgeon John Lynch.

Proceeds from all events will be donated to various local charities in the town including

Westmeath Hospice, Mullingar  Youth Cafe, Suicide Prevention, The Lions Club Christmas food

appeal, and Mullingar Simon Community with the hope  that no one in our town need feel  hungry,

homeless or helpless during what can be for a difficult time for some. All of the record

attempts will take place in the town centre as part of a promotion to kick start the Christmas

shopping season and will include live music and street entertainment all  afternoon, the full line

up of live acts of will be revealed in the coming weeks. The idea for this unique event came

about after Mullingar previously held the record for the most people wearing santa hats in one

location in 2009, beating the holders of the record Brockton in Massachusetts. For the next two

years the good citizens of Brockton  reclaimed their record but decided to extend the hand of

friendship to the people of Mullingar by joining forces and setting a new World Record

together.

On further exploration it came to light that both communities have plenty in common as

Brockton known as “The  City of Championsis the birthplace of Boxers Rocky Marciano and

Marvellous Marvin Hagler, as indeed  Mullingar is also home to  champion boxers

Maxie McCullagh and Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin. Brockton is also home to the

World’s first department store Santa Mr James Edgar, while Belvedere in Mullingar lays claim to

the World’s first Green Santa.  It is hoped that this event will help promote Mullingar in

Massachusetts USA and Worldwide and offer the opportunity to show  off the town as a fun filled,

family friendly place right in the middle  of Ireland to visit and as Mullingar’s launch for

The Gathering in 2013
