Mullingar to host Ireland’s Strong Man Competition


Westmeath County Council as main Sponsors, in association with Fáilte Ireland,
Lough Owel Motors and Mick Lynch Tree Services are delighted to announce the
return to Mullingar in 2014 of the prestigious “Irelands Strongest Man”
Championship which will be held this year in the stunning surroundings of
Belvedere House Gardens & Park, Mullingar on Sunday 22nd June from 3pm.

The Irish Strength Association is now in its 15th year and has been the qualifier for
all sorts of major strongman competitions such as UK Strongest Man, World
Strongman Cup, Major World Team Championships and even The World
Strongest Man. The winners for the past 14 years have battled for the greatest
Irish Strongman trophy – “The Finn McCool Trophy”.

Irish legend has it that Finn McCool in a temper one day lifted a clod of earth and
threw it in to the Irish Sea, thus forming the Isle of Man and leaving a hole that
became Lough Neagh. This is why The Irish Strength Association celebrates this
great giant of strength and honours the legend with the biggest title of –
“Ireland’s Strongest Man”.

“Ireland’s Strongest Man 2014” will present 7 of the toughest and most gruelling
tests ever in an Ireland Strongest Man Final and not only will it be an awesome
spectator spectacle, it is sure to make excellent television in the one hour
planned RTE programme .

Featured amongst the gruelling tests will be the “Car Lift & Hold”, which this year
is being sponsored by Lough Owel Motors, Peugeot Dealers, at Lough Sheever
Corporate Park, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. This event which will involve two cars
and two competitors in a head-to-head “lift and hold” of a one tonne car for as
long as possible.

The final event for the Championship Title will be “The Super Drayman Barrel
Load” which is sponsored by Mick Lynch Tree Services. This event will involve
two loading platforms and 2 competitors, with 90 seconds to load 5 barrels
weighing 125kg each up onto the platforms.

The 12 strongest men in Ireland will gather on the 22nd June for “The Battle at
Belvedere” having fought their way from 4 qualifying heats around the island of
Ireland, involving over 50 competitors.

The 2011 and 2013 winner Jonathan Kelly from County Antrim will want to retain
his Irish Title, but he will be sure to have a difficult challenge this year as several
of the top competitors in Ireland have made it again, including the 2013 finalist in
the UK Strongest Man, top 5 placed UKSM and ISM runner-up 2013 – Nicky Whelan
from County Wexford.

This will be an epic battle of our modern day legendary giants and will provide a
true spectacle of world class strongman talent that will be a “must see”

Belvedere on the 22nd June will also become “Destination Adventure Sport” with
Outdoor Discovery Adventure Company bringing along the tallest Mobile
Climbing Wall in Ireland and also Ireland’s newest craze “Archery Tag”, plus lots

Admission to the event site is €10 for an adult, €5 for children under 16, toddlers
up to 3 years of age are free, plus there are great family deals. Online booking is
