A SUMMER PARTY AT KILBEGGAN RACES  MONDAY 22nd 2015

It is 175 years since the first Kilbeggan races took place in March 1840. One reporter stated “the day was delightful, bearing semblance more to the month of June, on every side was to be seen happy hearts, smiling countenances, and sparkling eyes”. In 2015 it is time for the first June races next Monday 22nd June at 5.50PM. Many things have changed but in 175 years but “happy hearts” is the objective of Manager Paddy Dunican and the Kilbeggan Committee.

FIVE SPONSORED RACES AND A SUMMER PARTY PACK

At last, summer has arrived and to encourage families and groups to become involved, special offers are available for the races. The New Special Discounted Summer Party Pack includes an Admission Ticket, a €5 drink voucher, a €5 food voucher and a Free Race Card for just €20 per person for a group of 10 or more. Discounted tickets are pre-sale only and not available at turnstiles. The normal admission is €13 with a Special Family Discount Package for €20 covering 2 adults with children under 16 free. Regular race goers also have five sponsored races to pick from, which means better horses and competitive betting. The featured race is the Carmel Fay Memorial Handicap Hurdle of €20,000, sponsored by the Fay family. The T & V Novice Hurdle of €13,000 is sponsored by the Mullingar and North Westmeath Vintners Association; the Hurley Family Handicap Hurdle is sponsored by Pat McCormack; the Martinstown maiden hurdle is sponsored by J.P.McManus; and the European Breeder’s Fund is sponsoring a handicap chase over 2 miles 4 furlongs. This meeting often brings good quality horses and a few gambles took place in the past. It is not a meeting to be missed by regular punters and an ideal one for families and groups to get into the spirit of 1840.

Oscar Wilde once said that to get on in society you either “feed people, amuse people, or shock people”. The only shock you will get at Kilbeggan races will be the thundering hooves of horses but there will be plenty of amusement and refreshments.

FAMILY FUN DAY IN MAY

Gordon Elliott has been in great form and recorded a double with the gambled on Mustadrik 9/10F, who had won just 48 hours earlier at Downroyal and in the novice chase Akorakor 2/1JF won the novice chase. Akorakor was the horse who won the bumper at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday on the same day that Dot Love won the Irish Grand National with Liberty Counsel. Michael O’Leary pledged €200,000 to the winner of the bumper but he won the race with Akorakor. He rang from Portugal to say that the money was to be donated to the Injured Jockey’s Fund. This was shortly after the serious injury to John Thomas McNamara and it was a very generous gesture. Tom McNulty was a different type of owner in that it was the first time he led in a winner when the appropriately named Stay With It won. Willie Mullin’s horse Daisy Gift (R.Walsh) was an uneasy 2/1F favourite in the mares hurdle but won comfortably in the end.

All the signs are that the June meeting will be even better and if you want any additional information visit the web site for more detail’s (www.kilbegganraces.com). Remember that the first race begins at 5.50P and the earlier you arrive the more fun you can have. After 175 years, Kilbeggan racecourse has the experience to help you to enjoy yourself.
