Kilbeggan Race Meeting – Friday 2nd September

The summer in the midlands is often measured by the 8 race meetings held at Kilbeggan from April to September each year. It’s the social and unique core of the sporting season, bringing interesting people from all parts of Ireland, who enjoy the joys of life. Sadly, the last meeting of the year will be held next Friday, 2nd September at 4.40PM.

Paddy Dunican, Manager of Kilbeggan stated that “We are delighted that we are celebrating a superb year. This year has been an outstanding success for us with a major increase in attendances and, in particular this year, a massive growth in the number of people coming in groups. The quality of horses racing has also improved, which has created more competitive and exciting racing for all of our fans”
In racing terms the highlight has been the success of Rachel Blackmore the only female professional jockey riding in Ireland under National Hunt rules. She has taken racing by storm this year (including success at Galway) and rode 6 winners at Kilbeggan in the first five meetings, including two doubles on Jaimme Sommers and Glenwood for Ever in May, and the latter won again in June with Supreme Vinnie. All the leading trainers like Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott, Jessica Harrington, H.De Bromhead and Noel Meade won this season. Interestingly, Gordon Elliott, aside from his wins, has had 18 seconds at Kilbeggan in two years!

The most positive thing was the return of the crowds to Kilbeggan bringing back memories of the great years. The atmosphere of glamour, fun, family entertainment, laughter, and sport, made it the social event of the year in the midlands.

The final race meeting of the year will provide some great jump racing with the highlights being the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle of €18,500 generously sponsored by J.P.McManus and the Midlands Breeders Supporting Kilbeggan Beginner’s Chase of €11,500. The Greville Arms Leading Jockey Award will be between Rachel Blackmore (out injured at the moment) with 6 winners and Mark Walsh with 5 wins. It would be great achievement for Rachel if she could win it, as she only rode at 5 meetings. The Paddy Dunican Auctioneer & Valuer Leading Trainer Award is a great battle between our top trainers Willie Mullins with 7 wins and Gordon Elliott with 5 wins.

Next Friday is also a special day for Peter Downes, who is stepping down after 21 years as organiser of the Midlands Breeders. The Downes family have been associated with breeding horses, Mullingar in the past and Kilbeggan races for many years .Peter bred great horses from Celestial Gold to more recently the unfortunate No More Heroe, but his association with the Midland Breeders Support Kilbeggan project has been one of the great features in recent years and much appreciated by Kilbeggan and all lovers of horse racing.

Anyone who loves traditional jump racing will not want to miss the last race meeting of the year next Friday beginning at 4.40PM.
