More Than Just a Pharmacy Project

Whelehans was established in 1898 and since acquired in 2005, Pharmacist Eamonn Brady built on the trusted reputation and brand. The “More than just a Pharmacy” project, initiated at Whelehans is a shining example of what can be achieved with vision and belief in yourself, your team and an accurate assessment of what most benefits your community. The ultimate barometer of success is whether the community supports your initiative. Given the public response and the uptake of the extensive range of services at Whelehans, there is no doubt that the community love and support the “all under one roof” concept. Orla Cahill Whelehans Pharmacy MullingarPopular Whelehans pharmacy staff member and Ballynacargy lady Orla Cahill won national recognition at the recent IPN Irsh Pharmacy Awards. Orla was a finalist for Pharmacy Assistant of the Year at the National Awards.

The Krka Counter Assistant of the Year Award recognises excellence in knowledge and service to retail customers. Judges look to reward outstanding counter assistants, recognising those who go above and beyond their job description and make a real difference to their local community. Orla made the top 3 out of hundreds of applications; judges said that “they saw something special in how Orla fulfills her role at Whelehans and how she goes above and beyond to fulfill her customers’ needs”.

Eamonn Brady from Whelehans Pharmacy explains “working in pharmacy means making a real positive difference to people’s lives. Every day in pharmacy you meet people dealing with a roller coaster of emotions, form the most joyous occasion like the birth of a child to the other extreme of someone just diagnosed with cancer or just been bereaved. Orla can relate to people showing real empathy at people’s lowest points yet be there to celebrate and congratulate them at the most joyous times. Orla has all these skills in abundance. Our customers at Whelehans really relate to Orla; she is a breath of fresh air

Laura Swarbrigg form Whelehans who nominated Orla for the Award explained how Orla has become the “person customers can confide in and on many occasions, have a laugh with during their toughest of days”. Laura continued “Orla is known for her saying ‘I’ve got the best idea’ and comes up with ideas daily to help customers and help grow the business. Orla’s initials are OTC (Orla Theresa Cahill) so she was destined to give the best OTC (Over the Counter) service!”

After the Awards Ceremony Orla said “a huge thank you to everyone for all your kind words and good luck wishes, especially everyone in Whelehans Pharmacy who made me feel like a queen. I was thrilled to be a finalist and would like to offer huge congrats to Eamonn and all our team on achieving the ‘Business Innovation Award’ for Whelehans Pharmacy…I don’t think I’ve ever had such an amazing night with great people

The Benefit is Two-fold

The community of Mullingar and surrounding area now has a top-class health facility based right in the centre of town giving access to a wide and diverse range of services, all in one place. With the increase in footfall and visitors to the store, allied to great in store promotion and retention strategies, business has also increased. The success of these initiatives, along with other strategic growth initiatives has been borne out by the continued growth over the last few years with staff numbers increasing by 50% over the same period creating sustainable employment to over 30 staff showing how a small independent pharmacy can thrive in an era of large chains and multinationals.

New Whelehans Store at Clonmore Mullingar

Whelehans Pharmacy Clonmore MullingarWhelehans recently introduced a second pharmacy in Mullingar. Whelehans Pharmacy Clonmore opens 8:30am to 6:30pm Monday to Saturday with free parking. Eamonn Brady says much of the population within a 1 mile radius of the pharmacy at Clonmore are families with school age children, especially around the Greenpark, Ardleigh and Grange areas; current pharmacy provision is largely located in the town centre which can prove difficult to access, especially for those with children with parking issues and traffic bottlenecks at times. Pharmacy technician Laura Swarbrigg who manages retail at Clonmore says “it’s great to see so many new customers who are happy with our location and service at Clonmore” explaining “Whelehans Pharmacy Clonmore is located just off the Joe Dolan Bridge Road and Newbrook Road roundabout in Mullingar Business Park, beside the start of the Cycle Greenway. They are located next door to NGS gym.”

Eamonn concludes “I’m proud of my staff for helping Whelehans win this prestigious award and I thank our customers for supporting Whelehans over many years.”
