Mullingar Celebrates Purple Flag with Launch of ‘Ask For Angela’ Campaign

Mullingar celebrated Purple Flag over the weekend of Oct 26th where the town came together to celebrate the accreditation and in doing so raising awareness of the programme. Local businesses and venues were encouraged to get involved in flying the Purple Flag and supporting the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign. Friday Oct 26th saw the launch of the campaign at Canton Casey’s / The Market Square with music by Glen McMahon.

‘Ask for Angela’ is an innovative campaign enabling those who feel vulnerable in the evening and night time economy to use the code words to gain assistance from staff. They will be taken aside, or to a safer location, so they can speak in confidence to that staff member about what assistance they need. Options available to staff include offering to call a taxi for the individual, getting them back to their group safely or contacting their friends or family.
The scheme is neither gender nor age specific and will be available at participating bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels and evening and night time venues throughout Mullingar.

Speaking at the event, Nuala-Anne Curley, Office Manager with the Mullingar Chamber said ‘we are very proud to have retained our Purple Flag status for another year and is a reflection of the strength of ongoing partnerships and engagement activities with all key stakeholders. The Ask for Angela campaign is a fantastic initiative and we are delighted to launch it in Mullingar, with huge interest and uptake of the campaign to date. It really is key for all evening and late-night venues to support this campaign and make it a huge success in ensuring that Mullingar is a safe place where people can enjoy our vibrant evening and night time environment.”
