Chamber Update: Meeting with WCC Traffic Committee

Mullingar Chamber representative John Geoghegan, met with the newly established Traffic Committee of Westmeath County Council on Monday 20th July 2020 to discuss the ongoing traffic issues in Mullingar and how they might be resolved.  In advance of the meeting about 50 interested parties contacted Mullingar Chamber and all relevant and rational concerns were raised on their behalf at the meeting.

Ken Glynn, Hazel Smyth, Emily Wallace and Bill Collentine represented the elected members of WCC and Pat Keating and Pat Kavanagh represented the executive of WCC.

The meeting was a very frank exchange of views where the issues the town is experiencing were raised at length as well as a detailed discussion about the current situation and potential solutions.  WCC took on board all points made and sought an agreement that, following further implementation of the technology running the system this week, another meeting be set up for Monday 27th July to review the position.

This approach was generally agreed and the four key actions below were set out as an immediate response:-

  1. Technology – WCC to continue to engage with the traffic consultants this week to rectify any issues with the smart traffic algorithms to smoothen out traffic movements and alleviate unnecessary congestion
  2. Layouts – WCC to install yellow boxes at Dominick Street and Mount Street junctions to relieve blockages
  3. Signage – WCC to install signage at main town junctions directing traffic to town parking
  4. Meeting – Next meeting scheduled for 9am on Monday 27th July

Mullingar Chamber welcomes the upgrade works to the town and its streetscape and is supportive of Westmeath County Council in this endeavour, however we are keen to see the traffic issues the town is experiencing resolved and a resumption of smoother traffic flows through the town going forward and will work closely with WCC and the elected members to implement this as a matter of priority.
