Mullingar Achieves Coveted Purple Flag Accreditation for its Vibrant Evening and Night-Time Economy.

The town of Mullingar is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its exceptional evening and night-time economy (ENTE). Following a rigorous assessment process, carried out by expert assessors on March 31st, Mullingar has proven itself as a prime destination for a safe, enjoyable, and diverse night-time experience.

The Purple Flag accreditation is an internationally recognised standard that celebrates excellence in managing town and city centres during the evening and night-time hours. It is awarded to cities and towns that demonstrate a commitment to creating a vibrant, welcoming, and safe environment for residents and visitors alike.

Mullingar’s successful application was built on a solid foundation of outstanding initiatives and collaborations that have enhanced its evening and night-time economy. Among the standout features of Mullingar’s submission was the establishment of the Mullingar Community First Responder Unit. Mullingar’s submission showcased an impressive array of projects and events that have contributed to the town’s thriving evening and night-time scene. The highly acclaimed Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann stood out as a prime example of Mullingar’s ability to host large-scale and successful events.

Mullingar’s Purple Flag partnership was also commended in the assessment. The town’s strong collaboration between local businesses, community organisations, the local authority, and the gardai has been instrumental in creating a well-rounded and cohesive evening and night-time experience. This collaborative effort has fostered an inclusive and safe environment where everyone can enjoy the town’s offerings.

“We are absolutely delighted to be awarded the Purple Flag accreditation,” said Aisling Coleman, Manager at Mullingar Chamber of Commerce. “This recognition reflects the tremendous efforts made by the local stakeholders to develop a vibrant and safe evening and night-time economy. We are proud of the diverse range of attractions, events, and initiatives that make Mullingar an exceptional destination after dark.”

Mullingar’s achievement of the Purple Flag accreditation not only highlights the commitment to providing an exceptional evening and night-time experience but also reinforces its status as a leading destination in Ireland. Visitors and residents can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are in a town that prioritises safety, accessibility, and diversity during the evening and night-time hours.

Mullingar Chamber would like to thank all the businesses who supported them on their assessment night by attending and decorating their windows. They would like to thank Mullingar Community First Responders and Joe Connaire for their presentations. To Bill Collentine and Mullingar Tidy Towns for all their support in helping them achieve the Purple Flag Accreditation. To the Joe, Riona and Ellen Connaire and Anna and Aoife Dunleavy for the music on the night. To Daniel Boyne for his MC skills and to Ruth Illingworth for her walking tour of Mullingar with the assessors on the night. They would especially like to thank Westmeath County Council for their continued support in retaining the Purple Flag over the last 7 years.

As Mullingar basks in the glory of this prestigious accolade, it looks forward to continuing its efforts to further enhance its evening and night-time economy and reinforce its position as an outstanding Purple Flag destination.
